The Hague Driehoek (mayor, police and justice) announced during a press conference that more than 30 people were arrested at the riots in The Hague. Two agents were injured in the disturbances. Most arrests have been made for committing open violence against the police.
A special police team has been set up to trace the people who have been guilty of violence against the police and to journalists. The police expect more arrests to follow.
The Hague mayor Jan van Zanen calls the riots unworthy “unheard of and the Netherlands.” Van Zanen also says that serious attempts have been made to penetrate the Binnenhof. “Fortunately, this could be prevented.”
A demonstration for a stricter asylum policy on the Malieveld got out of hand on Saturday. The police were attacked and the windows of the D66 party office were thrown in. The police had not foreseen the enormous outburst of violence. The police say they have been present at the demonstration with a good number of agents, “but that about 1,200 people commit this violence against us, I am blood -chagrise about that,” says Karin Krukkert of the Haagse Police.
The police emphasized that it knew that people ‘with bad intentions’ would come to the demonstration. It was not known that people would also block the A12.
