Carlos Sainz ensured a curious scene in training at the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan. The Spaniard mistakenly drove into the box of the competition team Alpine.
The Williams driver Carlos Sainz Jr. got lost in the wrong box during free training in Baku. The Spaniard mistakenly drove his Williams into the box of the competition team Alpine and waited for service there.
The 30-year-old turned into the Alpine garage on Friday and parked his engine. However, the mechanics there remained idle because he did not belong to their team. Shortly afterwards, Sainz received the note by radio: “You are in the Alpine Box! Drive on!”
Sainz had placed in the foreign box according to the onboard pictures. It was only after it became clear that nobody would intervene, did he continue his journey. His short comment was only: “Yeah.”
It was sporty for the Williams pilot. In the first training session, Sainz took eighth place, in the second he did not come beyond eleventh place. A better placement at Alpine would have been unlikely.
Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto drove for Alpine on Friday. In the first unit both formed the bottom. In the second training session, they only improved slightly to ranks 16 and 20.
