Luca Zidane, son of football icon Zinédine Zidane, changed his sporting nationality to play for Algeria. The change was approved by FIFA this Friday. So far, the 27 -year -old goalkeeper had only been active up to the U20 for young talent teams in France.

The second oldest son Zidanes, who is currently playing for FC Granada in Laliga 2, is eligible to play due to his father’s origin. Zidane Senior, who once played 108 caps for Les Bleus and became world and European champions with them, comes from an Algerian family of immigrants.

Rumors have been circulating about a nationality change since 2020 when Algeria’s then coach Djamel Belmadi first expressed interest. Now it is certain and Luca Zidane could become equally important with regard to the qualification for the 2026 World Cup and the Africa Cup 2025. With a market value of 1.5 million euros, it is currently the most valuable Algerian goalkeeper. This year there were already four different keepers in Algeria between the posts.

So far, Luca Zidane has spent his entire career in Spain. After training at Real Madrid, he switched to Racing Santander in 2019. Afterwards it went to Rayo Vallecano free of charge before he moved to Granada in 2022 and two years later. The goalkeeper has three brothers, Enzo, Théo and Elyaz, two of which are also active in Spain. Enzo already finished his career.
