Former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron admitted in a new interview with “Billboard”, that he had “some problems” with the strict tour plan of the band.
New projects instead of endless tours
Cameron, who announced his exit in July, named the marathon concerts of up to three hours and the “constant tours” as the main reasons for his step. “This is definitely an art form in itself to be able to play such shows,” he said.
The musician emphasized that he wanted to concentrate on other artistic paths in the future: “I am at a point in my life when I want to use my time and energy in such a way that it is more based on what I want to pursue as an artist now.”
One of his new projects is this real ?, a band that initially created as a tribute to the punk pioneers of Wipers, but will now also record its own pieces that Cameron has “written over the years”. In the group he takes over singing and guitar; An album is planned.
Cameron also works with 3rd Secret, a super project with Soundgardens Kim Thayil, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic and Jon “Bubba” Dupree from Void. This band could soon tour – but not in the dimension of Pearl Jam.
“I now want to play a 70-minute, rousing set-I’m focusing on that at the moment,” said Cameron.
Amical farewell to Pearl Jam
He describes his exit as friendly: “I definitely gave them a lot of lead.” He spoke “a bit” to his former bandmates Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, “and it was fine.”
“Hopefully we will come together again at some point, drink a beer or something,” he added.
Pearl Jam has not yet presented a new drummer. No further tour dates have been announced for 2025 and 2026.
