On Sunday (5:30 p.m.) the Bremen will meet Borussia Mönchengladbach away. New signing Victor Boniface will then be in the squad for the first time – and also in the starting XI?
1: 4 against Eintracht Frankfurt and 3: 3 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen – Werder is still waiting for the first victory this season. Before the duel with the Gladbachers, the Bremeners on the offensive added again at the end of the transfer phase. Victor Boniface’s loan in particular caused euphoria among fans. His services were no longer in demand among the Leverkuseners. Werder was therefore able to borrow the Nigerian for this season. Coach Horst Steffen promises a lot from Boniface.
One who can play football will certainly raise the level. I have great hopes that this will be visible. My hope is that we have signed a great footballer.
(Werder coach Horst Steffen)
Boniface last played in the Bundesliga in April
Already, according to Steffen, Boniface “Moves and movements can be seen that I don’t know”. The striker was also known in Leverkusen for one or the other spectacular action. He scored eight goals there in the Bundesliga last season. He played his last Bundesliga game on April 20 at 1-1 against FC St. Pauli. Steffen did not want to reveal whether Boniface will be in the starting eleven on Sunday. But he will definitely sit in the team bus.
“He presents himself better from day to day. He arrives here, feels good and becomes easy,” Steffen likes the first impressions of Boniface. “I am very optimistic that he will get his season here.” Still, the coach emphasized, but he could not say when Boniface will present himself in his top shape in Bremen.
Werder’s offensive should also enliven Puertas
In addition to Boniface, Werder has also been able to sign Cameron Puertas since the Leverkusen game. The Spaniard borrowed the club from Al-Qadsiah from Saudi Arabia. In contrast to Boniface, the Bremen will also have a purchase option with him next summer.
It is gratifying that we have gotten boys who have quality and bring energy.
(Horst Steffen)
Boniface and Puertas are, according to Steffen, “players who offer us good opportunities”. Both already know each other, because they have already played in a team in Belgium at Union St. Gilloise. Senne Lynen was also there at the time. According to Steffen, this was helpful in integrating the new additions. “There was already a joyful ‘hello’,” he reported.
Victor Boniface and Cameron Puertas have already played in a team at Union St. Gilloise.
Puertas described Steffen as “very hardworking”. The Spaniard is a player who is traveling a lot on the pitch and always attempts to play. He also praised his qualities as a ball overall and his strong standards. Puertas can play on the eight, the ten and the offensive outer lane. Basically, according to Steffen, Puerta’s is “rather a central player”. On the outside track, however, there was also the possibility for this to pull the ball inwards.
