Before the start of the World Athletics World Cup, a 1,500-meter runner has trouble about omitted doping control. Is it still closed at short notice?
The World Athletics Championship in Tokyo begins in a few days-but a medal candidate comes into focus immediately before starting. There is an appointment against medium -distance runner Diribe Welteji from Ethiopia about a possible doping violation. It is currently open whether she can start in Japan at all.
The independent integrity commission of the World Athletics Association (AIU) has appealed to the International Sports Court CAS against an acquittal of the 23-year-old. The background is a procedure of the Ethiopian anti-doping authority that ended on August 27 with an acquittal for Welteji. The accusation: she is said to have refused or refused to check. Now the AIU not only calls for the review of this judgment, but has also requested that the athlete temporarily block the athlete until the final decision.
Welteji has been registered for the 1,500 meters at the Tokyo World Cup. The preliminaries start on Saturday at 12.50 p.m. German time. A decision by the CAS for the requested lock is expected before the title fights began.
The runner is one of the strongest athletes in the world over this distance. At the 2023 World Cup in Budapest, she won silver, at the Olympic Games in Paris she finished fourth. This year she is in third place on the world year’s best list – if she is approved, she is again considered a medal candidate.
