Former baseball star Davey Johnson died at the age of 82.

As the New York Mets confirmed on Saturday, the long -time player and manager died on Friday in Sarasota/Florida after a long illness. As a player and coach, he won the Major League baseball championship four times.

“His ability to encourage players, to develop themselves, and at the same time maintain a strong commitment to top performance was really inspiring. Davey’s legacy will live on forever in the hearts of fans and players,” wrote ex-Mets star Darryl Strawberry on Instagram.

Johnson was four times all-star, won the World Series with the Baltimore Orioles in 1966 and 1970 and won the Gold Glove for outstanding field game three times.

As a manager, he led the Mets to the title in 1986, from 1984 to 2013 he posted a total of 1372 wins. With 595 victories, he is still a record holder at the Mets. Internationally, Johnson led the United States to bronze at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
