Alfred Gislason is still under contract as national coach until 2027. It is still open whether the Icelander will be preserved to the DHB. For some time now, it has been speculated that after the home World Cup, a new trainer will take over the German national handball team.
“First of all, I like to work with this team. We have built up a team that can play well for a long time. And can get better and better,” the 65-year-old told the “Sport Bild” when he was approached as head coach of the DHB team.
“Yes, my contract runs until 2027. When I look at my birthday, I have to assume that the DHB will probably get a younger coach,” joked Gislason and followed: “I will go on, when something interesting is coming. Because I enjoy the game. But only if it would be something interesting. The DHB is outstanding, you will find a good solution.”
Handball: Gislason wants to avoid “great excitement”
But he doesn’t think of a career end as a trainer. “But stop? I won’t say somewhere: okay, I’ll stop. I have already tried that, it didn’t work,” continued the former chief coach of the THW Kiel, who did not want to talk about potential successors: “If I now throw in names, there would be great excitement. And I want to avoid it.”
In the past, two names have been acted as potential Gislason heirs: Florian Kehrmann and Bennet Wiegert. Kehrmann has been a trainer at TBV Lemgo since 2014. In 2020, the former international won the DHB Cup with the East Westphalia.
Wiegert, however, is the top favorite, who has become German champion and Champions League winner twice with SC Magdeburg. The rumors have recently been fired by ex-world champion Michael Kraus. At “Dyn” he had reported an alleged meeting of the leadership of the German Handball Federation with the SCM coach.
