The Hamburg city derby is one of the most explosive duels in German football. The 112th duel between the unequal neighbors HSV and FC St. Pauli rises on Friday evening. T-online looks back on some of the most memorable and spectacular derbies in Hamburg.
FC St. Pauli was able to win 18 of 67 competitive games so far. The Kiezkicker recorded the highest victory at the time of the Oberliga North. 30,000 spectators flocked to the Millerntor Stadium on Sunday, April 1, 1951. They saw a real demonstration of power in Braun-Weiß: St. Pauli beat HSV 5-0. At the end of the season, both Hamburg clubs play for the German championship in the final round – without success.
The HSV’s highest derby victory to date also comes from Oberliga Days. On February 24, 1957, the “red pants” at the then native Rothenbaum caught a cream day in front of 23,000 spectators. HSV chased St. Pauli 9-0 from the stadium. Klaus Stürmer scored five goals. Günter Schlegl contributed three more hits. HSV legend Uwe Seeler, then 20 years old, was also involved in the derby victory with a goal.
In the 1977/78 season, HSV and FC St. Pauli met for the first time in the 1st Bundesliga. 48,000 spectators came to the Volksgarl Stadium on September 3, 1977, with Walter Eschweiler whistled one of the most famous referees of his time. The HSV, after all, was the clear favorite of the Cup winner. And after 90 minutes the surprising loser: the “little” FC St. Pauli hit the city rivals 2-0.
In the 2001/02 season there was tribulation all over Bundesliga Hamburg. St. Pauli was beaten at the end of the table, the HSV dummy around in midfield. On the 32nd matchday, the Kiezkicker absolutely had to win their home game against the rival in order to have a chance of staying in the Bundesliga.
