The police in Breda did a remarkable find in a money laundering investigation last week: in a house in that city she found a sneaker containing a hardware wallet. That is a small device that acts as a digital wallet for crypto. When the criminal investigation department got the right pin code, the value turned out to be enormous. More than two million euros in crypto coins were found, the police announced on Thursday. A couple from Breda have been arrested.
The money laundering investigation began after signals that came in, among other things, anonymous report: the man and woman from Breda had a striking luxury lifestyle and the financial investigation started an investigation. Expensive designer clothing, jewelry, a Porsche Panamera and designer bags were seized during searches. But the biggest find turned out to be hidden in a shoe.
First the police were unable to secure the digital millions. Until the previously arrested man was arrested again. This time he simply had the pin code in his possession. With the code, the police managed to seize crypto currency worth around two million euros. In addition, there will be another six tons of Crypto that was previously intercepted.
According to the police, this is a big blow to the criminals. “By taking this ability, we immediately find them in their wallets and we take away their status,” the police write. In the Netherlands, around 16 billion euros annually deals with criminal money.
