There is no doubt that Antonio Rüdiger is an outstanding footballer. But again and again he affects unsportsmanlike behavior. He has now commented on that.
Antonio Rüdiger commented on his behavior in the Spanish Cup final before he returned to the national team. “I am aware that I am now being observed particularly critically,” said the 32-year-old of Real Madrid of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. “There is no question that my behavior was wrong and absolutely exaggerated – there are no excuses for that.” His behavior at the time was “wrong and absolutely exaggerated”.
The central defender emphasized that although he was an emotional game type, these emotions would also have made him the defender he is today. In the vicinity of the lost final against FC Barcelona (2: 3 after extra time), however, he “clearly exceeded borders”. The mix of disappointment about the defeat, discussions about the referee and his own injury had led to the freak. “It was a big mistake that I annoyed myself the most,” said Rüdiger.
In April, he had thrown a role Tape Association in the direction of the referee in April, seen the red card and then loudly insulted the referee. Several teammates and supervisors had to hold him back.
The campaign followed a lock of six games, which has now expired. At that time, national coach Julian Nagelsmann had publicly warned Rüdiger and emphasized that another incident would have “greater consequences”.
After an injury -related break at the Nations League final Four in June, Rüdiger is now fit again. In the upcoming World Cup qualification games on September 4 in Slovakia and three days later against Northern Ireland in Cologne, he will probably be back in the DFB squad. “My goal is to get back to my best performances after I’m finally completely painless again,” said the defender.
