The chief of Cabinet, Guillermo Francos, insists that “Milei does not care about money” and therefore could not be a corrupt. It will be right, since, as many artists, academics and others who are dedicated to their particular vocation, Javier Milei seems to be indifferent to the material benefits that his could report him, but that does not mean that all those who chose to accompany him have the same values. Unfortunately, politics has always attracted characters willing to use it to enrich themselves and it would be foolish to assume that such individuals do not abound among those recently turned into the Mileista creed. I would surprise that they would not be counted for thousands.

Although Milei will not have to worry too much about his own conduct, it is indirectly responsible for that of all the government officials that he heads. Since no one would think of taking it for a sentimental guy, since it is a hard one that is not moved by the tribulations of retirees, disabled, university professors and others who are protesting against the severe adjustment that is applying them, it would be to assume that he would not hesitate to defend all the defendants of acts of corruption, but it happens that there is a hole in their psychological armor. Although he loves exchanging denigrating verbal misners with his critics, he does not like to direct them against his sister Karina Milei. It can be understood, then, the restlessness that has taken over those who want the government to do well but have plenty of reasons to fear that, even if it were only for their own impericia, he manages to disintegrate, leading to the abyss the hopes he has managed to generate.

For some months, mileism is losing strength in part to the successes that has been noted in the battle against inflation. The scandal caused by the $ LIBRA case served as a notice about what could happen. While because it is an imparison related to a issue, that of the pyptomoneds, which few understood, the political impact was less than what was reasonable to foresee, he showed that outstanding government members were prone to associate with financial adventurers of dark origin. On the other hand, the one caused by audios attributed to the former head of the National Disability Agency, Diego Spagnuolo, according to which to win tenders the company the Argentine Swiss had bribed government officials, including Eduardo “Lule” Menem and, perhaps, Karina, has caused political tremors.

When the complaints coincide with the parliamentary rejection of Milei’s attempt to veto False, the government would have to give more persuasive explanations than those rehearsed. The officialist spokesmen are not wrong when they say that opposition sectors want to overthrow – disseminate – to the government so that Peronism can resume their successful combat to capital, but the message thus supposed will be accepted only by the minority that thinks in the long term and is reluctant to believe that sometimes the contrary to Milei could be right.

Anyway, who in the opinion of those who know him, Milei depends so much on his sister for his emotional stability is a major problem for the country that remains as caudillista as it has been throughout his history and feels more comfortable with a supposedly strong president. The relationship would be of importance if Karina would limit himself to privately playing the role that so many assume without trying to influence the president’s decisions, but it happens that, from the come on, she herself did not hesitate to take advantage of her to consolidate as the undisputed head of freedom progress that she improvised to give support to a man without a career in politics. Today, Karina’s finger has as much power in the current ruling and Cristina’s in the waning Kirchner world. And, like Cristina, Karina is accused of using it to accumulate a lot of money although, for now, the complaints against him have not reached the courts.

Nepotism, the propensity to distribute positions between family and close friends, is an almost universal evil, but in some societies, including those of the Middle East and Latinas, it is strikingly common and influences in a disastrous way in politics. Here, virtually all national presidents, provincial governors and municipal mayors have yielded to the temptations it offers under the pretext that they need to be surrounded by people in which they are given to trust. They are often disappointed, but since breaking with their spouses, parents, brothers, children, nephews or grandchildren would cause them a great crisis in the personal environment, they feel obliged to minimize the accusations until they are too late. It is for this reason that in countries in which nepotism is rampant, corrupt and inept hereditary “castes” integrated by subjects that owe much more to their family ties than their own merits are usually formed.

Milei triumphed in 2023 to a large extent because more than half of the electorate who gave the work of voting believed that it would end the predominance of a “caste” considered parasitic whose members had become accustomed to living well in the ribs of others that, crisis after crisis, were reduced to misery, but it would seem that, despite their notorious economic heterodox and other eccentricities, it shares many vices that are many vices, characteristic of the extremely discredited national leader class. It does not miss, then, that the same as its predecessors in the Casa Rosada, Milei is capturing an “caste” version that resembles that it aspired to displace. Although its members, many of whom are professional politicians who until recently opposed the principles claimed with vehement passionate by Milei, have learned to swear fidelity to the fiscal rigor and the zero deficit, in the background the elite they are forming is not very different from that of before.

Will Milei be able to recover from the blows you have just received? Since most corruption complaints that are formulating in some way to Karina, the logical thing would be to ask him to step aside until justice has determined whether they are true or mere products of the malice of those who have been harmed by their decisions, but few believe that Milei would be encouraged to go so far. The fear that if Karina would fall out of favor, her brother would collapse and that, without him, Argentina would be delivered again to the most foolish populism, has cast a shadow on the perspectives against the country that, until just a week ago, seemed so promising, hence the explosive rise in the country risk index.

That depends so much on a man who embodies a key idea, a simple but fundamental according to which the country has to get used to living within its genuine media, means that the future of Argentina hangs from a thread. It is not thanks to its intrinsic qualities that Milei dominates the national political scenario, it is because no convincing alternatives have yet emerged that could govern without inflation plans.

Perhaps the situation would be different if at the beginning of his management the president would have struggled to expand his support base by building a coalition with groups, starting with the PRO, which they had come to share their basic convictions. For petty reasons, I wouldn’t. Rather, instigated by Karina, Milei and the libertarian militants of the first hour they began to phagocyte such groups with the purpose of increasing their own power. To top it off, they would do it in the worst way, humiliating those leaders who resisted kneeling before the brothers.

Milei has never tried to hide the contempt he feels for politics that, good that it is inseparable from representative democracy, which is why he has left it in the hands of others so that he can devote himself full time to the economic affairs that fascinate him. While the country was in danger of being devastated by a hyperinflationary tsunami, its refusal to pay attention to what the party leaders said did not cause many headaches, but when the feeling that it had managed to put the macroeconomy and that therefore the country approached “normality”, it will have to pay more attention. It may be premature to assume that the emergency since it is behind and that, or not, Milei, hereinafter will have to fulfill all the functions that are inherent in the position of President of the Republic that it occupies, but unless it does it will not be entirely easy to carry out the drastic reforms that have been proposed to leave behind the centenary decay that has caused so many ills.
