A classic article from 2021.

According to James Hibberd’s recently published unveiling, “Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon“In addition to Daenerys’ rape in the” Game of Thrones “pilot sequence, there was another decision by the series makers, with which author George RR Martin could not make friends: the marriage between Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Tyrann Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon).

The purpose marriage initiated by Petyr Baelish Aka Kleinfinger (Aidan Gillen), which begins with rape on the wedding night, already caused discussions when it was broadcast among fans of the series. Among other things, it was argued about whether Kleinfinger was clear about Ramsay’s sadistic character when he delivered Sansa without resistance.

“Kleinfinger would never have given Sansa to someone who would do something bad to her”

If it had gone to Martin, this unfortunate connection would never have taken place. The author explained the “The Song of Eis und Feuer” series on which the success series is based, in an interview that Kleinfinger was in the book “Von Sansa”. So Baelish saw her half the time “when the daughter he could have had with Catelyn if he had married it” and the rest of the time as an image of her mother that he would have had for himself. “He would never have handed Sansa to someone who would do something bad to her,” said Martin, “it will be very different in the books.”

Even the claim made in the series that Kleinfinger was not clear about Ramsay’s sadistic streak and underestimated “a stranger”. In this way, it is portrayed in Martin’s books and in the TV series as a highly informed insider, which is particularly familiar with the noble families of Westeros.

“If you didn’t know, you are an idiot. If you knew it, you are my enemy”

Sansa, who sums up in the sixth season with Baelish in the sixth season: “Did you know about Ramsay? If you didn’t know, you are an idiot. If you knew it, you are my enemy.” In Martin’s books, the Bolton head married her childhood friend Jeyne, who only appears in the series, instead of Sansa.

Most recently, Martin had already announced his discomfort regarding another rape scene. He referred to a moment in the pilot sequence in which Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) raped his new wife in the wedding night despite her significant discomfort. Although Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) cries, he does not let go of her. The book is a love scene in which Khal notices the nervousness of Daenerys, wipes away their tears and slowly approach each other until sex occurs.

“We never talked about it, everything made it worse, not better,” says George RR Martin’s new background report. The series had already been criticized because of its dealing with sexual violence, the statement by the book author had the discussion re -infected.
