For months, the future of international Florian Wirtz football Germany kept on a trot, filled websites, newspaper pages and broadcasting programs. Two months after moving to Liverpool FC and the rejection of FC Bayern, the 22 -year -old is now speaking – and explains why he decided against the Munich.

Get out of the comfort zone Bundesliga, into the Premier League, the best league in the world – that was the motto at Florian Wirtz in transfer summer 2025.

“Like five years ago, when I went from Cologne to Leverkusen at 16, I also looked at where I can best develop and where I can become the most successful player,” said Wirtz to the “kicker”.

For this reason, he chose Liverpool FC – “and not yet regretted,” said the noble technician.

Wirtz was switched from Bayer Leverkusen to the Reds for 150 million euros in June – there was no German football professional. For FC Bayern, the change was a bitter pill.

Wirtz: Liverpool “greater challenge” than FC Bayern

For months, the German record champion – especially in the person of club patron Uli Hoeneß – had promoted Wirtz and ultimately collected a basket.

“I have already dealt intensively with both clubs, it was not an easy decision in the end. But I made them with a 100 % conviction and I am also happy about it,” said the 22-year-old.

It was “the more difficult step to get out of the whole environment and go to another country with all the changes. And into a new league that has a different style of play,” said Wirtz: “I would therefore say that it is a bigger challenge that I have deliberately selected to exist and become a better player.”

His goal was to continue to be the best player in the world: “Yes, definitely,” emphasized Wirtz.

The huge expectation, which is connected to him because of the huge transfer, leave him cold, the offensive star said.

Although he feels “that you are under even greater observation in this club. Everything is a number larger, and this also creates greater pressure that you have to deliver”.

But he now wants to “just play football. Of course, the fans expect a little more than if the club gets a player for little money. But I don’t put pressure on it, I try to simply do my best, no matter how much money I get. This is always like that.”
