On Wednesday (March 23), the Hanover local group of “Fridays For Future” invited the musician Ronja Maltzahn from a climate protest on Friday.
The reason for the short-term cancellation was the woman’s dreadlocks – these were “used by white people as a sign of oppression in the days of slavery,” according to the young activists in a private message to the white folk-pop singer. The ultimatum of the strikers, which many interpreted as excessive: If the musician cut off her dreadlocks, she could perform.
Ronja Maltzahn doesn’t want any quarrels
Now there was a “nice phone call” in which they apologized for the insensitive tone,” Maltzahn announced in a video in her Instagram story, and further: “I would like to say again very clearly that I I don’t want to start a conflict.” Furthermore, she keeps her fingers crossed that “there won’t be too much stupid press wind” for the actually great organization.
Activists apologize – and want to be right
In the meantime, the activists have also publicly apologized. The suggestion to shave the dreadlock was an invasion of the artist’s privacy, the local group in Hanover said on its website. However, the activists stand by their rejection – and add to their explanation with the reason: “In addition, as white people, we get compliments for the same hairstyle for which black people are racially hostile. That’s why black have resistance symbols […] not to look for on white heads.”
