Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori have once again secured the title in the reformed mixed competition of the US Open and thus prevented a triumph from tennis star IGA Swiatek.
The Italian duo won 6: 3, 5: 7, 10: 6 against the Polish and its double partner Casper Ruud (Norway) and celebrated their third joint success in New York 2024 and at the French Open in June.
“I think this victory is also for all double players who couldn’t take part in this tournament,” said Errani. The mixed competition had caused discussions in advance. The tournament was modified and was carried out with only 16 teams on two days.
The nomination criteria had also been changed: in addition to the top players of the tour that had qualified through their ranking position, there were wildcards. Under these circumstances, there was practically no space for double experts like Laura Siegemund.
Zverev resigned in the mixed of the US Open in 1st round
Errani and Vavassori had remained without loss of sets until the final. Against the Team Swiatek/Ruud set to number three, the Italians succeeded in defending the title after about an hour and a half, and victory is endowed with a million US dollars. Previously, the two had won 4: 2, 4: 2 in the semifinals against the Americans Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison.
Swiatek and Ruud had moved into the final with a 3: 5, 5: 3, 10: 8 against Jessica Pegula (USA) and Jack Draper (Great Britain). There Swiadek now missed her next triumph after the 24-year-old Wimbledon winner only won the WTA tournament in Cincinnati for the first time on Monday (local time).
In addition to Swiatek, numerous other stars had taken part in the competition, but sometimes left early. For Germany’s top player Alexander Zverev, his Swiss partner Belinda Bencic had ended in the first round.
Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) on the side of the British Emma Raducanu and the Serbe Novak Djokovic with compatriot Olga Danilovic had also missed the quarter -finals. The world ranking list of Jannik Sinner (Italy) had already canceled his participation in the tournament in advance. The individual competitions of the US Open start on Sunday.
