On the results board, everything shines: record sales, Objectives overcome, happy customers. In the halls, the story is another: exhaustion, eternal meetings, overwhelmed leaders and a silence that nobody wants to break.
Some companies confuse “high performance” with demanding the limit without measuring human cost. And of course, it works for a while. The problem is that this time is usually short and the high bill.
In these cultures the urgent many times wins: the one who sacrifices weekends is rewarded, not the one who plans to avoid fires; The heroism of extinguishing a fire is usually recognized more than the strategy that prevents it, is celebrated to the “gives everything”, although that “everything” includes health and family.
The result: teams that yield like fleeting stars, shine strong and go out quickly. The Burnout becomes a norm, talent is drained in the hands and what remains is a group exhausted with fear of failing and unable to innovate.
Alert signals
– Hours that extend until dawn “Because you have to close now.”
– War language: “There is no margin for errors.”
– Fear of saying “I can’t” or ask for help.
– High and invisible rotation: resignations multiply.
The irony is that, in the long term, this culture kills the same results that it sought to protect. Sustained high performance is not achieved with more pressure but with more intelligence and care.
How to transform the trap
– Measure success also for team’s health: not only ask about the figures, but for how they feel and what they need.
– Reward efficiency and prevention: recognize the one who delivers on time.
– Leaders as an example: a leader who faces difficult conversations without avoiding them transmits more than any motivational discourse.
– Learn from error: After a failure, gather to improve the process and not to find guilty.
It is not an achievement to win this race if you were left without a team for the next one. Culture is not what you say in your corporate values, it is what your people live every day. And if what lives is physical and mental wear, no matter how many publishes: the true account is already in red.
