Cologne (dpa-AfX)- With swords and rifles against monsters, zombies and human villains: Gamescom has been opened with the demonstration of some dozen trailers of new video and computer games. At the show on Tuesday evening in front of around 5,000 fans in Cologne, the screen was action -heavy and dark. The egoshooter game “Call of Duty – Black Ops 7” sends up to four players as a team into an apocalyptic future, in which they also have to prevail against the psychoterror of dark forces.
“World of Warcraft – Midnight” is about an end -time battle of elves against brutal beings and in “Bloodlines 2” about vampires. The horror classic “Resident Evil” shows the struggle for survival against undead in a new edition called “Requiem”.
Wake up for gaming
The games shown will come onto the market in the next few months or in 2026 – the previews should already arouse the interest of the fans and increase their willingness to buy. “Gaming has never been more dynamic than at the moment,” the moderator of the opening show, Geoff Keighley, advertised the industry, whose games are becoming visually better and better thanks to new technology.
In the coming days, thousands of fans will be expected in the Cologne exhibition halls, where they can try out new games. “We are here to play-and it just started,” said co-moderator Eefje Depoortere, who is known as Sjokz in the gaming and e-sports scene.
Represented big names
Gamescom shows more than 1,500 exhibitors and thus more than ever, in 2024 there were 1462. Streaming providers are also becoming more apparent at the Cologne event, which have become known with films and series and now want to bind their customers with games. Netflix, Disney (Walt Disney)+ and for the first time Paramount+ are represented at Gamescom.
Amazon Mixed at the opening show: The second season of the apocalypse action series “Fallout” was presented, in addition to two producers, the leading actors Ella Purnell and Aaron Moten also stepped onto the stage. Fallout is originally a video game that has now made it to the television series.
Strange to nostalgic
A BATMAN game had to be strangled, the figures as Lego-Figures shows (“Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight”). The struggles of the Lego figures looked rather droll in the trailer. It became a bit nostalgic at the trailer of “Death by Scrolling” by Ron Gilbert, who had a great gaming success in the 90s with “Monkey Island”. The new game is kept in a retro look – some people feel something like the gaming 30 years ago.
The actual fair begins on Wednesday morning, and the exhibition halls will be well filled by Sunday. Last year there were 335,000 visitors to Gamescom. This year, among other things, the Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU) and NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) responsible for the industry are expected.
