The hopes for a German double gold at the hockey European Championship have smashed. In the final, the women’s team set a narrow defeat.

The German hockey women missed the title at the European Home Championship in Mönchengladbach. In the final, the team of national coach Janneke Schopman lost to the Record winner Netherlands 1: 2 (0: 2) and at the end had to be satisfied with the silver medal.

The day before, the German men had ensured an atmospheric climax with their triumph against the Netherlands in the shootout – however, the hoped -for double gold failed to materialize. Unlike in 2013, when both DHB teams in Belgium were able to celebrate the European Championship title at the same time, there was only gold this year.

Pien Dickness (5th) and Luna Fokke (18th) met for the favorite Dutch women, who secured the European Championship title for the fifth time in a row. Since 2017, all major international titles have been selected from the Netherlands. The connection goal of captain Lisa Nolte (35th) was not enough for the DHB team to turn the game.

Despite the defeat, the final entry for the young German team is a success. In the first year after a personnel upheaval, the team was combative and presented itself in a strong form in front of a home crowd.

In the Hocypark Mönchengladbach, not far from the Dutch border, there was a folk festival at the mood before the kick -off. Both fan camps celebrated a joint hockey festival, the weather showed itself to the final from its friendlier side – but Oranje prevailed again on the square.

The Netherlands took the lead early. After a successful attack, Dicke brought her team on course in the fifth minute. Germany then found better into the game, but conceded the second goal before the break. The final woman Julia Sonntag was also powerless in the second Dutch goal.

The German women fought against the defeat in the second round. Nolte shortened and brought hope again – it got loud again in the ranks. But in the end the hoped -for surprise failed to materialize against the favorite. As in the preliminary round, the Danas also had to give up in the final.
