Outsider Rory Townsend sensationally won the 28th edition of the Cyclassics in Hamburg. The Irishman of the second -class Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team prevailed in an exciting finish of the bike race in the Hanseatic city on Mönckebergstrasse.
Townsend could not believe it itself. Even when crossing the finish line, he came to the helmet. And even after that, he kept shook his head in disbelief. The Irish master of his country -celebrated the greatest triumph of his career in Hamburg – and also duped some international bike stars.
Townsend wins in the outlier sprint
Townsend had previously been around 175 kilometers at the top for a long time – and at the moment when the outliers threatened to be obtained from a group of 40 drivers a few hundred meters before the finish, the 30 -year -old took a heart. He sat down from his colleagues and saved his lead in the sprint extremely much to finish. The Belgian Arnaud de Lie, third of the Frenchman Paul Magnier, finished second.
The crossing of the finish line was the highlight of an extremely exciting finish of the cyclassics in downtown Hamburg. Top sprinter and tour-de-france-france winner Jonathan Milan (Italy) and Biniam Girmay from Eritrea went out as empty as Wout van Aert (Belgium) or Jungstar Isaac del Toro (Mexico).
Townsend wins in Köhlbrandbrücke and five times Waseberg
The professional race started in Buxtehude at 12 noon – and thus for the first time in Lower Saxony. The 160 professional drivers of the World Tour race-last year’s winner Olav Kooij (Netherlands) had to cancel at short notice-had to cope with the longest route at 207 kilometers, which, according to the organizers, have so far existed at the cyclassics. After a long time, the Köhlbrandbrücke was again there – the five -time crossing of the notorious Waseberg with its poisonous increase.
On the last of the five climbs, the main field was blown up after several attacks. However, the unity of catching up and coming up was too late.
No German among the top ten
While the second -class team Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team – his team is not regularly at the World Tour race – cheered on his unexpected success, the waiting for a German victory in the Hanseatic city continues. Ten years ago, a German triumphed at the Cyclassics in André Greipel.
No German driver landed in the top ten on Sunday. However, Sprinter Phil Bauhaus fell almost 50 kilometers before the finish, but he was able to continue.
Front of arrival for dozens of everyone driver
There had been trouble early Sunday morning for dozens of everyone. According to information from the NDR, in particular on the Bremen-Hamburg metronome route, some participants did not get on the trains with their bikes. Apparently because no multi -purpose car had been carried.
On at least one train, no bicycles are said to have been taken with them – and cyclists that have already been entered have been transported out again. A corresponding request from the NDR to the metronome railway company has so far remained unanswered.
Falls at the amateur races
The amateur races had fallen in the morning, but not to the extent that some media reported. At NDR, the organizers spoke of individual operations of the medical service, which are not unusual in such a big race. There were no turfs of the number. Around 11,000 amateur drivers were there on the two offered routes over 60 and 110 kilometers.
