Formula 1 is during the summer break. For Ralf Schumacher Zeit to look back on the season so far.
Formula 1 pauses – and Ralf Schumacher uses the summer break to draw an intermediate conclusion. In conversation with “Bild”, the former racing driver speaks openly about weaknesses and progress in the premier class. Two drivers in particular come into the focus of his criticism.
“If he really wants to become world champion, he has to dismiss his son,” says Schumacher, the current situation at Aston Martin. Lance Stroll is in the qualifying duel with Fernando Alonso 0:27 in the back, the deficit can no longer be overlooked. Father and team owner Lawrence Stroll are now faced with the decision between family ties and sporting success. The father has to make a decision: feeling or success.
Schumacher also becomes clear at Lewis Hamilton. The move to Ferrari did not go as hoped. “I said before the season that it could go wrong.” In the meantime he sees a lot of theatrics at Hamilton. The internal criticism, struggle by car – nobody helps all of this. The vehicle clearly fits teammate Charles Leclerc. Schumacher is convinced that the decision for Leclerc has long since been made. Nevertheless, he does not believe in a withdrawal during the season.
Schumacher is positive about the new leadership duo at Audi. Team boss Jonathan Wheatley and Managing Director Mattia Binotto did a good job. “You have the skill of getting people with know-how on board and using them according to their skills.” He does not know how far the development of the engine. But internally it says that you are very happy.
At Red Bull, Schumacher sees a change of style under Laurent Mekies. He brings back the old Red Bull feeling-open, human, open. Nevertheless, it will take two to three years until something really goes. The team is currently in mediocrity.
In his view, the racing bulls do better. Despite the conversion phases, the car is stable and function in all conditions. “They make a super job. Also with the drivers.” For Schumacher, the team is an example that Red Bull can also learn from.
A clear judgment is made by Schumacher on the future of Haas. A sale is not absolutely necessary, but: “I would look for a partner-as a junior team like Racing Bulls for Red Bull.” Cadillac can be a possible solution if the US manufacturer 2026 has been entering.
According to Schumacher, Alpine does not need a Flavio Briatore at the top. His time was over. “You need technically experienced people at the top, like Horner.” Briatore could help the team as an organizer and networker.
Despite many open questions, Schumacher sees potential for changes – both in the paddock and at the top of the teams.
