The 28th edition of the cyclassics promises a quick professional race that also leads over the Köhlbrandbrücke again. Thousands of hobby drivers and fans will also be in Hamburg on Sunday. The NDR transmits live.

The 161 professional drivers of the World Tour race awaits the longest route that has been with the cyclassics with 207 kilometers longest, which, according to the organizers, have so far been available. For this purpose, around 11,000 amateur drivers are expected to start over 60 and 110 kilometers on the two offered routes. The NDR broadcasts live on TV and NDR.de from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Köhlbrandbrücke again and five times Waseberg

The professional race starts on Sunday (12 p.m.) in Buxtehude and thus for the first time in Lower Saxony. After a long time, the crossing of the Köhlbrandbrücke and the five -time crossing of the notorious Waseberg with its poisonous increase await.

“Experience has shown that city courses are always very, very quickly,” said ex-professional Fabian Wegmann, one of the racing leaders of the cyclassics. That is also nice for the audience. He also counts with more attacks by the drivers.

This year, the Sprinter, who have often won over the past few years, could be left behind by the increased crossings of Waseberg – and possibly an outlier group will make the victory among themselves.

Greipel won in the Hanseatic city in 2015

So far, the top sprinters and Tour-de-France-Stppen winner Jonathan Milan (Italy) and Biniam Girmay from Eritrea have been registered. Last year’s winner Olav Kooij (Netherlands) also takes part. In addition, young star Isaac del Toro (Mexico) is expected to start. Superstar Tadej Pogacar’s team -mate recently caused a sensation with his second overall rank at Giro d’Italia. There was a German victory ten years ago when André Greipel triumphed in the Hanseatic city.

Safety requirements increased

In addition to the sporting organization, the tasks of the organizers are becoming increasingly demanding in the face of a wide range of political conflicts. “The challenges will increase in the next few years,” said Matthias Pietsch, Managing Director of the organizer ASO.

Due to the tense world situation, the security requirements of authorities are higher than ten years ago. According to Pietsch, more staff are necessary for the route posts and more security material, for example to protect against attacks with vehicles. The effort is necessary “with all the consequence and all costs that are behind it”.

In the Hamburg urban area and on the streets around the Hanseatic city, there will be numerous closures as part of the cyclassics.
