The Hamburg-based Ella Seidel was the only German to reach the third round at the WTA tournament in Cincinnati.
The 20-year-old surprisingly defeated the American Emma Navarro 6: 4, 1: 6, 6: 4. Seidel’s next opponent in the fight for a place in the round of 16 is the winner of the US duel between Caty McNally and McCartney Kessler (No. 29).
From 1: 4 to 6: 4 in the last sentence
Seidel achieved a remarkable comeback against Navarro. After the significant loss of the second sentence, the Hanseatin, which was led in the ranking beyond 100th place, was apparently in the decision, but the match against the world ranking was still turning one after the other by catching up with five gains – from 1: 4 to 6: 4. After 2:18 hours, Seidel used her second match ball.
Seidel, who had won in round one in three sentences against the Russian Polina Kudermetowa, is the last representative of a German player quartet at the $ 5.15 million tournament in Ohio.
Siegemund, Maria and Lys already outside
Wimbledon quarterfinalist Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) had already left the preparatory competition for the US Open in the second half of August in New York before the former Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) and Eva Lys (Hamburg) had to bury their hopes in the round of the last 64.
