The farewell to Dzsenifer Marozsán at Olympique Lyon has been stuck for a long time. Now there is clarity about your new club. It is an unusual decision.

Dzsenifer Marozsán has found a new club – and causes a stir with her decision. The former international joins the Saudi Arabian first division club Al-Qadsiah WFC.

The 33-year-old, European champion in 2013 and Olympic champion in 2016, leaves Olympique Lyon after nine years. Her farewell from France had been certain for a long time. “From the top of Europe to the heart of Al-Khobar. I am ready,” said Marozsán in a video of her new club on social media. Al-Qadsiah did not provide information on the duration of the contract.

The midfielder ended her career in the DFB jersey two years ago after 112 international matches. In Saudi Arabia it will run with the number 66. There she also meets her former teammate from Lyon, the Icelander Sara Björk Gunnarsdottir. Al-Qadsiah was third of the Saudi Women’s Premier League last season.

Marozsán is one of the few European footballers who play in Saudi Arabia. The country’s women’s league was only founded in 2022. The country is repeatedly criticized for human rights violations and the disadvantage of women. In 2034 Saudi Arabia will host the men’s World Cup.
