All Sissi on TV and in the cinema
The fame of Elisabetta di Bavaria is mainly due to the three films shot in the 1950s (Princess Sissi, Sissi – The young empress, Sissi – Destiny of an empress) with Romy Schneider, in the role of the empress, to whom the nickname (in reality never had) of Sissi is attributed. Karlheinz Böhm played Emperor Francesco Giuseppe.
Romy Schneider played the empress Elizabeth again in the film Ludwig (1972) by Luchino Visconti. Unlike the trilogy, in Visconti’s film the empress is represented in a disenchanted, aristocratic and more realistic way. The filmography on Elisabetta d’Austria includes 30 film works.
The first film was made in 1920 in Germany. Ava Gardner also played Sissi in 1968. There are also two Italian actresses who have played the role of the empress: Sandra Ceccarelli (The fate of a prince) and Cristiana Capotondi (Sissi).
