Alexander Zverev fights into the semi -finals in Toronto. He is disturbed shortly before the crucial moment – and reacts to it afterwards.
Alexander Zverev reached the semi-finals at the ATP Masters in Toronto-even though it was disturbed by the ranks. The top German player prevailed in the quarterfinals against Alexei Popyrin after a set deficit 6: 7 (8:10), 6: 4, 6: 3. It was already the fourth victory in the fourth duel with the 25-year-old Australian.
In the fight for the final entry, the Hamburger now meets the Russian Karen Chasthanow. Zverev, who is in Toronto in position one, could win his eighth Masters title in Canada.
“After the loss of the first sentence, I had to tell myself that we both play well,” Zverev said after the match. He had the feeling that he would get his chances if he continued to play well, and he succeeded. “I can’t complain about the second and third set.”
Excitement led to an incident in the third sentence: At Zverev’s last service game, the 28-year-old was disturbed several times by a spectator. Security forces intervened and led the fan from the stands. Shortly afterwards, the Tokyo Olympic champion converted his first match ball after 2:42 hours. Then he waved towards the square where the troublemaker had previously sat.
Zverev had started the tournament with a frozen. Afterwards he won against the Australian Adam Walton, the Italian Matteo Arnaldi, against whom he celebrated his 500th victory on the ATP tour, as well as against Francisco Cerúndolo from Argentina.
The success against Popyrin meant Zverev’s 75th semi -finals on the tour. Among the active players, this brand also only reached Novak Djoković.
After the early end in Wimbledon, Zverev had taken a break of tournaments in July. He spoke openly about his mental problems. In a podcast, he recently said that he was now “fresher in his head” again. He may not play his best tennis in Canada or Cincinnati – but at the US Open “I will be a title candidate again,” he emphasized.
For Zverev, the tournament in Toronto is also the dress rehearsal for the last Grand Slam event of the year in New York, which begins on August 24th. He had already won the title in Canada in 2017, at that time in the final against Roger Federer.
