Guns n ‘Roses are against a new ATMOS edition of her legendary double album “Use Your Illusion”. Now Steven Wilson speaks.
In 1991 Guns N’Roses published their legendary double album “Use Your Illusion I and II”. In 2022 it was to be edited in a Dolby Atmos version by the six-time grammy-nominated producer Steven Wilson-but the band made their veto without further ado.
Recommendations of the editorial team
Steven Wilson is particularly known for his work with Porcupine Tree, Storm Corrosion and numerous new mixes of classic rock albums in surround sound. The producer received the order from Axl Roses Band to re-mix the double album of rock giants for a new edition in favor of the 30th anniversary in 3D sound. In an interview with “Scars and Guitars”, Wilson now explained that his processing was rejected by the band. He explained that the band did not like the idea of listening to her music in spatial audio. Wilson himself only learned about the band’s label. The renowned producer is not known why Axl Rose and his colleagues no longer appeal to the idea of an immersive new edition.
A missed chance?
Wilson has already mixed around 40 songs from the “Use Your Illusion” era-including B-pages and outtakes-in immersive 3D sound. Despite Wilson’s completed production, Guns N’Roses rejected the publication. The only exception is the orchestral re -recording of “November Rain”, which came onto the market as a single piece in 2022. The decision of Guns N ‘Roses, Wilson’s processing process is unusual. Many classic rock bands are now relying on Dolby Atmos formats.
The fans are also disappointed. “Use Your Illusion” is one of the most important rock double albums of the 1990s. The work for an entire generation of listeners: inside and (hi-fi) fans would have made a dolby atmos version newly accessible and the legacy of the band further upgraded. Now the entire Dolby Atmos version of the album has to linger on Steven Wilson’s hard drive until Axl Rose and Co may still opt for a publication.
