Formula 1: Domenicali sees potential for 30 races

Jeddah (dpa) – Formula 1 is also considering expanding to Africa as part of an expansion of the racing calendar.

“In addition to America and China, I think there is potential to be represented in Africa soon,” said Formula 1 Managing Director Stefano Domenicali to the British TV broadcaster Sky Sports F1 and added: “The interest there is great, that’s for sure another area so far missing from the geography of our calendar.” Among other things, a return of the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, on which Formula 1 was last driven in South Africa until 1993, seems possible.

This year, the top motorsport class is planning 23 races for the first time. In the future, up to 24 World Championship races are conceivable by 2025, after which the number of Grands Prix could continue to increase. “I would say there is potential to go to 30,” said Italy’s Domenicali. That is realistic “in relation to the interest we see around the world,” emphasized the 56-year-old: “It’s up to us to try to find the right balance.” It is also about keeping historic venues in Formula 1 and giving new places a perspective.

A strategy for the future should be presented very soon. The expansion plans are also viewed critically by the racing teams due to the increasing loads. Las Vegas in the USA is also considered a potential new race location. The Formula 1 makers are very interested in a better market position in North America. Already this year, there will be a drive in Miami for the first time. In addition, the Grand Prix in Austin/Texas is still an integral part of the calendar.
