The extreme mountaineer Thomas Huber was involved in Laura Dahlmeier’s rescue mission. Now he talks about his impressions.
Former biathlete Laura Dahlmeier killed in the Leila Peak in Pakistan by a rockfall. Her friend, the extreme mountaineer Thomas Huber from the “Huberbuam”, went to the rescue group and was still trying to get to the double Olympic champion. But the salvage was discontinued due to the weather conditions. Huber now reports on his impressions.
The 58-year-old already wrote on Instagram of a “repeated overflight” with a helicopter and the realization that “Laura had risen to her last summit”.
In an interview with “Bild”, Huber now stated: “Her posture left no doubt: she hadn’t survived.”
The management of Dahlmeier announced that it was “Laura Dahlmeier’s explicit and written will”, “in a case like this nobody should risk his life in order to recover her. In this case, her wish was to leave behind on the mountain.”
Huber now said the “Bild” newspaper: “I have already lost a lot of friends on the mountain.” Of course, you wonder at such moments whether the risk is worthwhile. But after his return from the mountain, he suddenly had a thought that felt like a “quiet smile from Laura”. She was a role model to consciously live life.
Huber explained that the mountains are now healing for him. It is more difficult for the rope partner of Dahlmeier, Marina Krauss, who now has to “face everyday life”. On Instagram, Huber also wrote: “I hope that we all, especially Marina, also get the time to process it well. And I knew Laura as well that it would be all of his meaning that peace finally stopped.”
