In the event of her death, Laura Dahlmeier did not want to be recovered from the mountains. Reinhold Messner is moved by this decision.
Laura Dahlmeier’s death not only shakes winter sports, but also the international mountaineering scene. The 31-year-old had killed in an expedition at Laila Peak in Pakistan. Now Reinhold Messner commented on the tragic misfortune – and found moving words.
In the WDR interview, Messner said: “Laura Dahlmeier is missing in the mountaineering scene. I have a lot of sympathy with the relatives.” Dahlmeier was “one of the best mountaineers in the world”, he emphasized.
Dahlmeier’s management confirmed death on Wednesday afternoon. The former biathlete had already been hit by a rockfall on Monday afternoon. Messner made it clear that he saw no mistake at the Garmisch-Partenkirchner. “Laura Dahlmeier has surely broken up with the conviction that she has grown and nothing will happen,” said Messner.
“But we all know very well that there is always a residual risk. Because nature is much stronger than we can imagine,” said Messner: “We humans are human. We make mistakes, even if this was not the case. On the contrary: everything went perfectly, except for this danger from above, which is one of the deadliest dangers in mountaineering.”
Dahlmeier had also clearly regulated dealing with his own death during his lifetime. According to her management, it was her express will not to be recovered in the event of a fatal accident. A rescue operation should not have been expected to be expected. The decision to leave her body on the mountain was part of her conviction.
Messner showed great respect for this wish. He sees it in this a “grandeur unrequested, which belongs to the traditional mountaineering.” He emphasized: “The mountaineering loses a great alpineist.”
