The former DFB coach Danny Röhl leaves Sheffield Wednesday shortly before the start of the season. This was announced by the English second division club on Tuesday.
Röhl, once an assistant to national coach Hansi Flick, worked for Sheffield since October 2023 and led the traditional club to relegation in his first season. Most recently, it was enough for the financially Klammen club to place twelve in the EFL Championship.
Röhl had spoken publicly about his ambitions for a return to Germany in summer. His ex-club RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg were said to be interested in him, but both positions are occupied for the time being. “I see the interest of clubs as confirmation of my work. There were already inquiries last year, including from Germany, from the Bundesliga,” said Röhl in June the “Bild”.
He added “as soon as possible” he added as head coach in the Bundesliga. “I want to measure myself against the best teams, with the best trainers,” said Röhl.
According to a report of “The Athletic”, the studied sports scientist, who can allegedly leave the association free of charge by 2027, now takes a break to wait for a suitable offer.
Sheffield was Röhl’s first stop as head coach, previously he worked as a Flicks assistant at the DFB and Bayern Munich. The co-trainer was also the Zwickau native at RB Leipzig and FC Southampton.
