In extension against Spain, Ann-Katrin Berger becomes a tragic figure-because she doesn’t look good at the decisive goal. Then it becomes emotional.

The DFB women no longer recovered from the shock in the 113rd minute: Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí had just achieved the late lead goal in the European Championship semi-final-which ultimately decided the competitive game in the Valigrund Stadium in Zurich.

The focus is also on the focus: the German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, who had brought the selection of national coach Christian Wück in the first four with an outstanding performance in the quarter-finals against France. Because the shot from Bonmati from an acute angle went into the goalkeeper, but Berger made the ball pass surprised.

After the game, the 34-year-old spoke plain text in the TV interview. When asked by ARD reporter Inka Blumensaat whether the shot from Bonmatí had been durable, Berger replied directly: “Yes. I also take the guilt on myself.” Even more: “The short corner has to be, very clearly,” confirmed Berger. “That’s why I’m all the more disappointed with myself. I can still make so many parades – that should just have been mine.” The keeper seemed inconsolable, spoke with a headed head: “That’s why I’m incredibly sorry for the team because they really gave everything.”

She feels “just disappointment”, because: “The girls made a great game again after 130 minutes last time (the victory after penalty shooting against France, note of the editor) and now back into extension against Spain – that’s just a hard game, and we knew that.” Due to the “brilliance of a player, of whom we all knew (Bonmatí, editor’s note)”, was “just bitter.”

Overall, the DFB team did well against the favorites: “I don’t know how many opportunities Spain had, but we also had a couple. We knew that the Spaniards had more ball possession, we knew that we had to stand compact and have to wait for our chances. And if we do not use the team that is not an outstanding team, we will punish.”
