He had to compete with the severe legacy of Freiburg’s coaching legend Christian Streich and convinced directly. For this, Julian Schuster is now being rewarded with a new contract.

SC Freiburg has extended the contract with head coach Julian Schuster. The 40-year-old had led the club directly back onto the European stage in his first season. As usual, the Bundesliga club did not provide any information about the exact term of the new contract. Co-coach Lars Voßler and analyst Franz-Georg Wieland are also retained to the coaching team.

“Julian and his team made an impressively good job last year,” said board member Jochen Saier. Schuster brings “a very high degree of quality and identification”. The development of the team is “absolutely positive”, the entire environment is very closed. “It just feels good,” continued Saier.

Schuster took over the office of long -term coach Christian Streich a year ago. Under his leadership, Freiburg qualified again for the Europa League after a year break. The first participation in the Champions League was only missed on the last match day.

The development of young players like Jordy Makengo and Johan Manzambi was particularly striking last season. In addition, Schuster was also consistent with personnel decisions. Even experienced powers like his former teammate Nicolas Höfler sometimes found themselves on the bench.

The team is currently in the training camp in Schruns in Austria in the Montafon to prepare for the new season.
