Berlin (dpa -AFX) – Despite the significantly falling number of asylum seekers, the municipalities do not give a all -clear for their care. The general manager of the German Association of Cities and Municipalities, André Berghegger, spoke of an “urgently needed breathing space” in the “Rheinische Post”. “Nevertheless, the situation in cities and municipalities is still tense,” he said.

Berghegger referred to more than 1.2 million people who had been accepted from Ukraine, as well as more 850,000 people who had applied for asylum in Germany since 2022. Many of these people with the right to stay would only be distributed to the municipalities. Their integration, accommodation and care would unchanged the cities and municipalities with great challenges.

Tense housing markets

This mainly affects the areas of daycare and school as well as integration into the labor market. In addition, in areas with tense apartment markets, it is difficult to provide people with living space with residual rights. Many refugee accommodations are therefore still proven.

The number of asylum applications in Germany fell significantly in the first half of the year. According to current figures from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), 61,336 people submitted an application for protection in Germany for the first time. That is almost 50 percent less than in the corresponding period of the previous year ./shy/dp/he
