Germany’s best tennis player could in future be looked after by a big name of the sport. In the past, Alexander Zverev had little luck with well -known coaches. He only wanted to “let go of” one coach. An overview.
As if he wanted to show the world that he is progressing with his project to reorganize himself: As publicly as Alexander Zverev trains in the renowned tennis academy of Rafael Nadal with his uncle Toni Nadal, it is no wonder that the speculation should be upset: According to Sky, Toni Nadal should actually become the new coach of the 28-year-old, “Rafa” himself in the future Take care of the currently stumbling Zverev.
“If it is true that Toni Nadal is the new coach from Sascha Zverev, then he did everything right,” said Boris Becker in a joint podcast with the former professional player Andrea Petković. Nadal knows how to win Grand-Slam tournaments, said Becker. And if Rafael Nadal says something as a mentor, Zverev must also listen. “I think the combination is totally exciting. I wish it will be.”
It would be a turning point for the Olympic champion of 2021-which he had indicated in his emotional appearance after the first round in Wimbledon two weeks ago. “I have never felt so empty,” he said at the press conference after the defeat against the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. And further: He lacks “just the joy of everything I do. It’s not necessarily about tennis.” He had to understand “which people bring me joy, which motivates me”. He wanted to provide answers to the Masters in Toronto (from July 26th).
He may now have found an answer to the coaching question. However: Zverev had tried other coaches in the past – and had failed again and again. Only one stayed at his side in the coaching team: father Alexander Zverev Senior, whose role is also increasingly critically seen. One pattern is emerging: Zverev and other coaches – that failed again and again due to time to “different ideas”, which particularly disturbed Zverev. This is also why it slammed twice.
Can Nadal now work what didn’t work before? Zverev now feels the desire for change – and does the insight to also question your own methods? T-online explains his previous attempts with other trainers.
Juan Carlos Ferrero (July 2017 to February 2018): The French Open winner from 2003 has been looking after the new tennis superstar Carlos Alcaraz for years, and has already coached the 22-year-old for five Grand Slam victories.
Before that, however, the Spaniard should coach the world ranking of Zverev at the time. But the employment relationship – Ferreros first as a trainer – lasted only a few months. After the third round at the Australian Open 2018, Zverev announced the abrupt separation from the Spaniard. “My team was exactly the same, only Juan Carlos left,” said Hamburg at the time at a press conference.
“We had an argument according to the Australian Open, which is okay if it only affects me and him. I also have these arguments with others, and we still work well together,” Zverev later continued to the “FAZ”.
But: “This dispute affected my entire team and there was a moment when he was very disrespectful to everyone. So I had to end the relationship.” Ferrero had another idea of “how to behave on the pitch. He wanted to make me a calm, balanced guy – which I have never been and will never be.”
