The Province of Drenthe seizes maintenance on the N374 at the end of August to construct eight fauna tunnels and a water diver under the road. That benefits the quality of nature in the Natura 2000 area of Mantingerzand.

Thanks to the tunnels, animals such as badgers, amphibians and other small mammals can safely cross without danger to the asphalt. The tunnels come at strategic locations, based on ecological research into the tensile patterns of animals.

The construction is done in combination with planned regular maintenance on the road surface. The work is carried out in one go, which limits the nuisance for the environment and road users as much as possible. There will be a new asphalt layer with markings and there will be grass concrete tiles along the road. The work is expected to be completed at the end of October.

Provincial States have made more than 1.7 million euros available for the fauna tunnels. The investment is completely covered by money from the government for strengthening nature in Drenthe. Visit the province’s website for more information about the roadworks and The nature recovery work.
