Which Germans are there?

Christian Kukuk (Riesenbeck): As the Olympic champion, one of the favorites is also on the individual title, even if Checker, his gold horse from Paris, is not included. Kukuk relies on Just Be Gentle at the European Championship. At the Chio in Aachen, the 35-year-old was still the best German in the great prize.

Richard Vogel (Pfungstadt): The 28-year-old is also part of the narrow favorite group, and he has been racing in front for a good two years. His fast horse United Touch S is a spectacle with his large gallop.

Sophie Hinners (Pfungstadt): The 27-year-old EM debutante (starts with Iron Dames My Prins) is considered the starter of the scene, is currently the most successful German jumping rider. Since the beginning of the year, she has achieved 16 victories in international exams. She is in a relationship with Richard Vogel, which leads to a premiere: for the first time, a couple for Germany are starting at a large championship.

Marcus Ehning (Borken): At 51, he was the veteran in the German team, Ehning relies on the stallion Coolio at his tenth European Championship. When he won Olympiagold in 2000, his colleagues from La Coruna were still in daycare and primary school age.

Hans-Dieter Dreher: Is even two years older than Ehning and fulfills a lifelong dream. Dreher does not start in the team with his gelding Elysum, but only as a single rider, but he celebrates his championship debut at an advanced age. “As a small child, I always cheered. I am now really happy that it finally worked”he told the SWR.

Who are the favorites?

Although Germany was not always at the front recently and also missed a medal at the Chio in Aachen, national coach Otto Becker looks optimistically at the European Championship. “I think we are part of the circle of favorites, and we also made something.“To keep pace in the extremely tight tip, but must “Everything fit, everything has to be right”.

Switzerland stands out with the freshly baked Aachen winner Martin Fuchs and the reigning European champion Steve Guerdat. But Great Britain also sends title candidates on the course with the team Olympic champions Ben Maher and Scott Brash in both ratings.

Defending champion Sweden relies on a pure women’s team this year and does without stars like world champion Henrik von Eckermann or Peder Fredricson.
