Much more than a friendly. Ten days after the death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who disappeared in a tragic road accident in the night between 2 and 3 July, Liverpool returned to the field. He did it against Preston North End, for a summer friendly who turned into a tribute to the former Reds footballer. The tribute was touching, between choirs, scarves, flowers and a minute of recollection from absolute silence.

Before the match, the captain of the home team Ben Whiteman, visibly excited, deposited a bouquet of flowers under the clove of the Liverpool fans just as the notes of “You’L Never Walk Alone” resonated in the stadium.

The stands of the Deepdale, the Preston stadium, were full of Reds fans with scarves, flags and shirts dedicated to Portuguese. T -shirts with the number 20, the one who wore Diogo Jota and who has just been officially withdrawn by Liverpool.

After the touching minute of silence, the kick -off. Liverpool takes the lead in 33 ‘with Conor Bradley, but there are no celebrations. The Reds player, after the goal, raises his eyes to heaven. When, on the other hand, Darwin Nunez doubles in the second half, the exultation of the Colombian remembers Diogo with a smile: Nunez cares and mimics to play the PlayStation, just like his partner did. The game ended on 3-1, the Tris of Liverpool marked him Cody Gakpo who made “20” with his fingers, to remember, once again, Diogo.
