Three rare Sri-Lankan panters were born in Bestzoo. The cubs were born on 19 May and can be seen for the public for the first time from Wednesday.
The young panters were born blind, as usual. In the first days they mainly slept and drank milk with their mother. After ten days their eyes opened. “Now they are becoming more brutal and they are already starting to nibble meat,” says the zoo. If the weather is going well, the cubs can explore the country house with their mother for the first time on Wednesday.
The SRI-Lankapanter is a small leopard species that occurs on Sri Lanka. Due to deforestation, their habitat is becoming smaller and the animals are threatened with extinction. In 2018 there were an estimated 700 to 800 in the wild. In zoos worldwide there are still around 75 copies.
The birth is special: it is the first time since 2019 that Sri-Lankan panters were born in Bestzoo.
