Just a few months after Michael Hurley died in April at the age of 83, new music from him appears posthumously. “Broken Homes and Gardens” will be released on September 12th. The single can already be heard “Fava”.
The songs for the successor of “The Time of the Foxgloves” from 2021 writing the Outsider-Folk-Barde in recent years. As it says in a message from his label, the plate was mastered just two weeks before Hurley’s death.
“Broken Homes and Gardens” contains a combination of new material and interpretations of older songs, including “Indian Chiefs & Hula Girls” from the album “Watertower” (1987) and “The Abominable Snowman” by “Parsnip Snips” (1995).
Nobody wrote songs like Michael Hurley
For 60 years Michael Hurley was an important part of the US folk scene, debut in 1964 with the LP “First Songs” at Folkways Music. His songs inspired many different musicians such as Cat Power and Will Oldham, Roots-Korypfe like Lucinda Williams to root rockers like Deer Tick.
Michael Hurley was known to write songs that were warm and simple and acted on unconventional topics. So he was not only able to sing about great love, but also about fishing bones and cookie cutters, werewolves and abandoned pigs.
