What was once a busy traffic junction at the Appel intersection is now a car -free boulevard with plenty of room for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport. The through traffic now runs through an underground tunnel. The bus station on Spoor 1 was also renewed and integrated into the new greenery.
The former conservatory square underwent a complete metamorphosis. For example, almost 4,000 m² of paving was broken up and replaced by grass zones, trees and planting. There was a playful zone for children, three wadis for water collection and a green amphitheater for open -air performances.
The new green connection runs from the station over the apple garden and the conservatory park to Kortrijk Weide. The city worked together with De Lijn, AWV and NMBS for the project. The total cost for the top finishing of the Appelentuin is more than 4.3 million euros, which is just over 1 million euros for the conservatory park.
The artwork Sing Sing by Frederik van Simaey will also be given a permanent place soon. The music fence was previously purchased during Triennial Kortrijk 2018 and was recently restored.
