Guardianship organization Nidos feels overwhelmed by the municipality of Coevorden. This afternoon it was announced that the placement of fourteen minor refugees in the Tuindorp district will not take place. According to Mayor Renze Bergsma, the safety of the girls at this location cannot be guaranteed.

“Nidos is surprised by the speed and one -sidedness in the decision -making of the municipality of Coevorden,” reports a spokesperson for the body. The refugees in question fall under the custody of Nidos. “The events of the past few days cannot be reconciled with creating a quiet place where these young people can build their lives and their safety is paramount.”

A group of people caused several evenings as a protest against the reception of the refugees. Windows of the intended shelter were thrown in and cameras were destroyed. Since Wednesday there was an emergency ordinance in the neighborhood. The police and the mobile unit were needed several times.

“It is sad that violence and intimidation by local residents are decisive,” said the Nidos spokesperson. “Ultimately, the young people are most likely to do this.”

According to Mayor Bergsma, the fourteen girls earn “a safe and pleasant place to live”. Nidos cannot say what will happen to the refugees now.
