The women’s football European team was dominated by German teams for a long time. Most recently, the Netherlands and England prevailed. But national coach Christian Wück can rely on a player with title experience.

When the German National National team celebrated the last European Championship title on July 28, 2013 in Solna in Swedish, there was a player in the squad, who was still there in 2025: Sara Däbritz. The then 18-year-old moved into the squad of national coach Silvia Neid due to some injuries.

“At that time I surprisingly moved as a chick. I think we managed to develop a very great team spirit through the tournament,” said Däbritz at the press conference a few days before the German selection against Poland on Friday at 9 p.m. (live in the first and at Sportschau.de).

Däbritz was not used in the 1-0 win in the final against Norway, but it was the start of an impressive international career. From SC Freiburg we went to Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain to Olympique Lyon. In the coming season, the midfielder will switch to Real Madrid.

The German internationals Melanie Leupolz, Sara Däbritz, Laura Benkarth and Almuth Schult (VL) celebrate the 2013 European Championship title.

Däbritz fetches Olympic victory with the DFB selection

With the national team, Däbritz celebrated an even greater triumph three years after the title of Solna: the team won the Olympic victory at Rio’s games. However, another EM title has so far not been added. In 2017, the team was eliminated in the quarter -finals against Denmark, and European champion became the Netherlands. Three years ago, the German players had to surrender to the host English women in the final.

The European Championship had been a German domain for years. The DFB selection won the title six times in a row by Sara Däbritz ‘year of birth 1995 to 2013. In addition, there are successes from 1989 and 1991. The first European Championship edition won Sweden (1984), Norway was at the top of the podium twice (1987, 1993).

Spain goes to the women’s European Championship as a top favorite

So the times of the German series victories are over. And yet the DFB team hopes for the big throw at the tournament in Switzerland. The title is the goal, which made several German players clear in advance, including Linda Dallmann from FC Bayern.

But the competition is great. In the past ten years, the top European teams have become increasingly closer. And yet there is a clear favorite with Spain on the title. The team from the Iberian Peninsula around the two-time world footballer Aitana Bonmatí won the World Cup title in 2023 and is also considered the team with the greatest potential in Switzerland.

Sara Däbritz relies on team spirit

In addition to France and defending champion England, the German selection remains (only) the role as a co -favorite. National coach Wück was optimistic in the Sportschau interview, but knows about the severity of the task: “I believe that the quality in women’s football at a European championship is now so dense that many factors are important to stay to the end and to update the trophy.”

As in 2013, Sara Däbritz relies on a strong team spirit. “What I’m already feeling is that something very special is created,” said the midfielder. “If we continue with the setting, a lot is possible with the euro.” Maybe even the ninth European Championship title for Germany.
