The bicycle pole in Beilerstraat in Assen, which is abhorred by many, is, together with the redesign to a bicycle street, off the track. To the joy of many local residents. Because the blockade for cars through a pole in the middle of the road did not fall well. They would like something different, namely the approach to riding car traffic.

Because the speed must be a bit down for a safer Beilerstraat, also for cyclists, there are a lot of local residents about that.

The municipality of Assen will come up with something in the coming months. Because he has also heard the high speed as the main complaint on a residents’ evening. This summer we are working on a sketch. What it looks like is still uncertain. But speed inhibitors, in the form of thresholds, is a common wish.

They regularly drive too fast on Beilerstraat. There applies to the southernmost part, an asphalt road of 600 meters that connects to the Europaweg, a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour. For the rest of the Beilerstraat that is a maximum of 30 kilometers, up to the city center.

But to say that motorists also adhere neatly to those speeds? No, because rides regularly ravage the street. Whether it is on the part of 50 kilometers, or the part of a maximum of 30. All those speeding offenders are a thorn in the eye. They therefore want the whole road to become a 30-kilometer zone. And maintaining it would not be wrong either.

The municipality is prepared for this. But then they have to change a few things on the road surface. The current road profile of the southern piece does not fit with a maximum speed of 30 kilometers now.

How Assen is going to change that, and what road profile should come, is still the subject of study. Everything must be feasible and affordable. The intention is that a first sketch design is ready after the summer vacation, and then residents can have their say about it.

Also for cyclists it is looked at what is now the best and most safe and attractive cycle route, from the direction of Beilen to the city center. Traffic research shows that one group of cyclists on the southern part of the Beilerstraat takes the Parallelweg as a bicycle route, the other group the main lane and mixes between the cars. Another group of cyclists is about the piece of cycle path along the Asserbos. The municipality wants to see if and how it can better steer those different cycling routes.

This fall must be clear what the approach for Beilerstraat will be. In the middle of next year, things will be overhauled. Assen has to tackle the sewer system along the southern piece of Beilerstraat. The water pipe must also be replaced. The municipality wants to do all the work on the road in one go, so that it is only open once.
