The European evening against the Poles was chaotic. For the kick -off Polish supporters stormed the branch and also afterwards there were skirmishes in and around the stadium. When the main building was closed, it led to unrest in the corridors around the dressing room of the visiting team. The police used tear gas to stop the hooligans. Two players from Legia Warsaw were arrested. One player was convicted afterwards.

The European Football Association UEFA fined AZ, but the football club successfully opposed that punishment. The CAS ruled that AZ cannot be held responsible for what happened.

The disturbances caused a lot of commotion. In Poland there was an indignation response to the arrest of the two players. Legia spoke of “scandalous events” and convicted police intervention. Even Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki joined the riot and signed up with Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
