Is it a bit over and out after all these years with a music party on the square? TV authority Tina Nijkamp thinks that Jan Smit must seriously take into account a relegation. “To NPO 3!”

It was once a ratings success, but that is no longer a music party on the square. Jan Smit’s musical TV show is actually watched quite poorly, but according to Tina Nijkamp extra episodes have been ordered. “That program has been around for a long time on NPO 1 and that was always quite a hit, but not at all in recent years.”

Through the country

How many people are looking at it? “It hardly scores 500,000 viewers and I am surprised that it will get six episodes this year,” says Tina in the podcast Tina’s TV UPDATE. “Last year there were four and now six, really a lot. Jan Smit always presents that. Also striking is that it is only held in two places.”

“Normally it actually originated as a program that travels throughout the country, that you really have a music party on the square, in your area. It really had a regional function, but well, that is of course expensive to sit on such a tent every time. It is a bit of the Netherlands Muziekland in the past.”

On the ring

This year the program is only included in two places, according to Tina. “Leeuwarden and Amsterdam. The recordings in Amsterdam have already been. That was at that festival on the Ring last weekend.”

It is time for relegation, she thinks. “I really don’t think it is a NPO 1 program at all. I think this should be on NPO 3 that the theme of music also really adopted. Then I think: why is that still on NPO 1? So of course you don’t get any viewers on NPO 1 and that really needs that channel, because it is really in tough weather.”

In the summer

Music party on the square is broadcast in the summer, from July 25 to August 29. “Then the competition will have free rein, so if they wanted to try a new show, they have a good chance that it will succeed,” Tina concludes.
