In a new interview, Johnny Depp spoke about the past few years-especially about the legal dispute with his ex-wife and actress Amber Heard. He said: “I was like a crash test dummy for #metoo.”

He also explained: “No, I don’t regret anything – because what can we do against dinner last week? Nothing at all,” said Depp about the highly respected court trial with Heard.

Johnny Depp on prejudice and industry behavior

In the “The Times” interview on Saturday (June 21), Depp referred to his feeling that he had been condemned prematurely by the industry and the public before the actual process had started. He said his experiences had taken place in front of the big revelations around the producer Harvey Weinstein: “And I absorbed everything, picked up everything in me. And so I wanted to see from the hundreds of people I met in this industry, who was on the safe side.” Depp does not mention that the term #metoo has existed since 2006 and received great attention at the latest in 2017.

In the interview, he also praised the San Sebastián film festival. There he had received an honorary prize in 2021 – before the court proceedings with Heard and while the allegations were in the room. “Despite all the slander and the bullshit, they kept me loyalty,” said Depp.

The “Curse of the Caribbean” actor continued to explain that-now that the legal proceedings were ended-he did not see himself as someone who would celebrate a classic comeback: “To be honest? I didn’t go anywhere.” He alluded to the fact that he had never withdrawn from the show business and was always involved in projects.

The process against the Heard: public, defamation and internet hatred

He deliberately managed the court hearings in the United States: “If I do not try to represent the truth, it would actually be as if I had actually committed the deeds that I am accused.” Johnny Depp had strongly sought a public procedure at the time and finally got it right.

The argument between Depp and Heard started in 2018 with a guest contribution by Heard in the “Washington Post”, in which she described herself as a victim of domestic violence, without calling Depp.

In 2022, the jury Depp then agreed that it was slandered. The divorce process of the former couple was publicly accompanied and received media attention like no other. In the course of this, the Internet played a major role – especially Heard became the target of hate. The two were married from 2015 to 2017.
