19 children stay in the Schuilhoeve, the oldest of which is 9 years old. Half is multiple disabled. The Ukrainian supervisors stay somewhere else, but all run services, which means that there are supervisors in the orphanage 24 hours a day. They are originally from the city of Dnipro, 150 kilometers south of Kiev.

‘People with a big heart’

Anzhela Chucva is the director and wanted to thank the municipality of Stede Broec for the shelter. She handed mayor Ronald Wortelboer a huge, traditional Ukrainian bread.

“We think the Netherlands is a beautiful country, but the most important thing is that we humans have met a big heart. They helped us, the moment we needed it. We are grateful for that.”
