The end of the year is over. Petra Kvitová has decided to hang the tennis racket.
Petra Kvitová will soon open as a professional for the last time. The two-time Wimbledon winner has announced her resignation-and already determined the time.
In a detailed article on Instagram, the 36-year-old said on Thursday that she would end her career after the US Open this year. The Grand Slam in New York is said to be its last tournament appearance.
“I have achieved more than I could have imagined, and I am extremely grateful for everything that gave me tennis over the years,” wrote the former world ranking second. The tennis “taught countless lessons, not only on the pitch or in the gym, but also in life. Without this wonderful sport and everything he gave me on and off the square, I would never be the one I am today.” Although such a decision “never” falls “easily”, it is “a happy moment” for them.
Kvitová celebrated her greatest successes in Wimbledon: 2011 and 2014 she won the prestigious classic lawn. There are also six titles with the Czech team in the Fed Cup, today’s Billie-Jean King Cup.
In 2016, an attack caused a sensation in her apartment. A burglar injured her with a knife on the left hand. She returned six months later – and already won her second tournament after the comeback: in Birmingham 2017, her 20th title on the tour.
Kvitová won her last tournament victory in Berlin in 2023. This year it was hardly possible: only a match could win – in Rome. In the world rankings, it has therefore slipped to 572. For Wimbledon (from June 30th) she received a wildcard on Wednesday.
