Through the large SUV of the Korean brand we explore what is hidden behind the Adas planet, to understand how technological aid can really give a hand to driver and passengers in everyday life

June 19 – 08:53 – MILAN

How many times have been spoken of Adasdriving help. Sometimes we tanding their praises, if you deserve this, other times with a pinch of constructive criticism. However, it is worth dwelling on one aspect: technology as a tool at the service of people in daily use. This is the core of the matter, because a long list of driving aid and security systems remain purely a list if deactivated, not used in the correct or completely snubbed way. To make sense of all this we have taken Hyundai Santa Fethe top of the range model of the Korean house. A technological and modern SUV produced by a continuously rise brand and which has invested importantly in this field. And the results are seen.

Hyundai’s goal

So what does Hyundai do to facilitate and improve the life of its customers? Given that in the video above it is all explained in detail, we could enclose the answer to this question in two words: concrete innovation. Yes, because technology is fine in itself serves very little. For this reason – on Santa Fe but also on other brand vehicles – we find “Ancora” physical keys In the central tunnel, the most frequent ones, in order to avoid unnecessary distractions by entering the submenu of the infotainment system. But, if used intelligently, technology can be particularly useful to avoid dangers that can range from a simple but expensive damage to the bodywork to cause a serious accident.

Comfort

There are three key points of the speech: comfort, safety and connection. Starting from the first aspect, the goal is to make the trip to driver and passengers as pleasant and relaxing as possible. Comfort understood not only as ventilated and heated seats, lumbar support, parasol tendon and so on, but – bridge connecting with the paragraph that we will soon dedicate to digitization – also as vocal commands managed through proper software. Asking to do instead of acting, without distractions: today it is possible to do it, why not exploit it? And then another aspect relating to the comfort of Hyundai vehicles is to have moved the gearbox selector – only on cars equipped with automatic gearbox, of course – on the steering column: not only free space in the central tunnel to have more storage compartments, but the action of going from d to r or vice versa during a maneuver is more practical and quick, being the lever much closer to the steering wheel.

Safety

The most consistent chapter is that of security, so much so that Hyundai called SmartSense a whole package of technology at the service of motorists. The functions to try and experiment are truly incalculable, so we will limit ourselves to explain the main ones. A premise: the functions of which we will speak are also present on other Hyundai cars, depending on the model and setting up. We took the Santa Fe for completeness of equipment, but many things are also found on Kona and Tucson, or Inster, i20 and Ioniq 5. We start from the adaptive cruise control combo and assistance to the centering lane: less fatigue on the long motorway sections and more safety. Very simple: the driver must not worry about anything else if not to set a cruise speed and keep his hands firm on the steering wheel. The car will make the rest, keeping the car in the center of the lane and constant speed, regardless of climbs and descents. Note: the driver must always be ready to intervene, we are not yet talking about autonomous driving in the proper sense but of assisted driving, therefore we must always be ready to curb, although the car regulates the speed depending on the car that precedes.

Safety in the foreground

Another interesting function is the Blind Spot View Monitor: When you put the arrow, speedometer and tachometer project the images of a rear camera capable of observing the blind corner to facilitate immissions on other roads or avoid cutting the road to cyclists and pedestrians. It is also useful during the change of lane on the highway and adds to the classic light notice on the rear -view mirror. There are also 360 ° cameras for maneuvers, complete with projections from the top of the car. There is also the automatic front emergency braking, and there is also the reverse one, useful for not going to hit the cars and objects during the parking lots. The function is also useful Junction: Has it ever happened to be at an intersection, having to turn left but have the view covered by a car that – in the opposite direction – must it also turn to her left? And just when there seems to be a free road, here another car appears, thus resorting to a sudden braking shortly after starting the turning point. Here, this function is managed autonomously by the car, able to read if another car is arriving or not, intervening on the brake if the affirmative. And it is also present for the rear view, useful for the side exit from a parking lot.

Always security

Two other functions not strictly related to driving are the Safe Exit (In practice, the doors are blocked if the car reads a car or cyclist at close range) and the sensor abandonment, which sounds if it detects movement on the rear seats. Or, if not sensors, notes that previously a rear door has been opened and, once they have reached their destination, it has not reopened it. In this case, the on -board computer recalls, with a message, to check that you have left nothing or nobody on the rear seats. It must be said that it is possible to enter the driver assistance menu to customize aid to driving, also assigning them to the favorite key. With two keys behind the wheel you can quickly disable abandonment lane and exceeding speed limits. And if you have the windows lowered and you are about to enter the gallery, the car independently raises the open windows activating the air recirculation. Finally, a technology present for now only on Santa Fe but which will also arrive on other Hyundai vehicles is the UV-C drawer to neutralize bacteria present on personal objects such as keys, wallets or smartphones.

Connectivity

On the connection side, it is good to know that the Digital Key It is available as an additional technology on Santa Fe, Inster, Tucson, Kona and Ioniq 5 FL for smartphones with iOS and Android systems. It works with NFC technology, exactly as you do to pay at the restaurant with your smartphone or to show a train ticket to the controller. The digital key is saved in Wallet And it is possible to share the key with other users for a variable period of time. However, the physical key is always supplied. On plug-in and electric, moreover, by setting the car navigator, the car manages independently and regenerative braking according to the conditions. On Santa Fe there are obviously Android Auto and Apple Carplay (which with the latest version do not require the wire), two wireless charging sockets and then there is the BlueLink connectivity. With electrics and plug-in you also have the functions related to the management of the charging, while above all you can open and close the car remotely, open the windows, activate the horn if you are not in a parking lot, read the residual autonomy, the fuel consumption, add favor to the home, manage the air conditioning, see the data of the journey with information such as maximum speed, mileage, time at the driving, time in parking and so on. Under “Diagnostic of the vehicle” it is possible to consult the state of the car, if it has anomalies or if interventions are needed. You can set a remote map, share the vehicle and set a user profile with your settings. In short, between technology, safety and connectivity there is to indulge yourself, but above all it is possible to travel more relaxed, safer and more connected, even when you are far from your car.
